Salesforce is a powerful cloud-based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system that helps businesses manage data around their customers and sales. Since 2008, Salesforce has offered the Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP) as an add-on to manage donors, donations, campaigns, and other information for nonprofits. Since it is customizable, new “objects” can be created, or apps installed, to track things like program delivery, volunteer hours, and more. Salesforce generously donates up to ten free licenses to qualified nonprofit organizations!
In 2023 Salesforce rolled out the Nonprofit Cloud (NPC), Unfortunately, Nonprofit Cloud is not free, ranging from $60 to $300 / user / month depending on the version you select. So what is the difference, and is NPSP still available?
In contrast to NPSP, Nonprofit Cloud is built directly into the Salesforce platform, giving you access to nonprofit features and capabilities without the need to go through an installation process for various nonprofit features, However, while NPC offers some enhanced features and innovation, it does not yet offer some functionality available in NPSP. Some examples include Volunteers for Salesforce, a free app that provides excellent volunteer management functionality that is crucial to many nonprofits. There are also many third-party applications available on the AppExchange that have developed integrations for NPSP but not for Nonprofit Cloud.
So what does this mean for you? Although Salesforce is not planning any new innovation for NPSP, since there are thousands of nonprofits utilizing it, they are not planning to sunset NPSP and will continue to maintain it. In my opinion, I would stick with NPSP since it is a proven system, it is well documented for support purposes, and it is free to nonprofits. Keep those licensing dollars for your mission!
